It's the final day of Newmarket's July meeting and we've enlisted Races Now's Harry Fowler (@Harry_Fowler8) to mark our card once again.
It’s Super Saturday with top-class racing across the country, but the standout event is at Newmarket – the July Cup, which once again looks like a cracking renewal.
The Bunbury Cup is as competitive as ever, while the Superlative Stakes features a winner who could kick-start a top-level career. What a card we have in store.
Charlie Appleby has won this race for the last two years, most recently with the brilliant Desert Flower, and he saddles the favourite again here with Snow Light.
However, Orion’s Belt is the one that catches my eye. She made her debut against the colts and was heavily backed, going off a short-priced favourite.
She showed inexperience when under pressure late on, losing a few positions but with that run under her belt, improvement is likely.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win Orion’s Belt - 2/1 (William Hill)
Nine runners here. Miss Nightfall is favourite after being well-fancied for the Sandringham at Royal Ascot, following an eye-catching effort at Goodwood.
But the one for me is Bountiful. She’s only had one try at this trip, which was a solid effort in Listed company. She also ran in the Sandringham but didn’t see out the mile, and that showed.
Dropped a couple more pounds, I think she’s a good each-way play back at 7f.
Harry’s Selection – 0.5pt e/w – Bountiful 10/1 (Ladbrokes/Coral, 3 places)
This looks like a very good renewal. It’s unusual to see such a short-priced favourite in a race like this, but it’s understandable after the unlucky run last time out.
That said, Ten Pounds has caught my eye for a while. If you’ve been reading the Odds Now Punters Panel, you’ll know I tipped Ten Pounds as my best ante-post bet at 25/1 a couple of weeks ago. He's now around 6/1 and I’m happy with the position – so no need to add another selection.
Harry’s Selection – No bet on the day. Ten Pounds - 25/1 was suggested ante post)
Can’t lie—this race has disappointed me a bit numbers-wise, likely due to the stacked racing calendar across the country.
Three of the six runners are for Godolphin. Of those, I like the Gosden-trained Fifth Column.
He was seventh last time, but that doesn't tell the full story – he was first home on his side of the track, with the first six all drawn on the near side, showing a strong bias. Off the same mark and with Ryan Moore now on board, I think he’s got a great chance.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win – Fifth Column 9/2 (general)
This race often produces high-class winners, and Italy looks like another smart prospect. You could certainly make a case for the winner of this being considered for next year’s 2000 Guineas.
That said, it’s still a long way off and Aidan O’Brien’s record in this race isn’t particularly strong. With a short-priced favourite, I’m happy to sit this one out.
Harry’s Selection – No bet
The feature race of the weekend. The late supplementation of Notable Speech adds more intrigue and signals confidence from connections.
I had been interested in Symbol of Honour, but Godolphin’s move suggests they prefer the supplemented runner.
I've landed on Flora Of Bermuda. She should’ve won at York, had a messy run but still finished just a neck behind Inisherin. She ran a solid race last time against international raiders at Royal Ascot, and I don’t see anything in here of that class. She looks primed for a big run.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win – Flora Of Bermuda 11/2 (Ladbrokes/Coral)
We close out the July meeting with a 1m4f handicap.
Atlantic Sunset appeals most – an impressive winner last time and a horse that looks to be improving, which can’t be said for many in this race.
It’s not the strongest contest on the card, and I think Atlantic Sunset will be hard to beat.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win – Atlantic Sunset 7/2 (general)
1:40 – 1pt win – Orion’s Belt – 2/1 (William Hill)
2:12 – 0.5pt e/w – Bountiful – 10/1 (Ladbrokes/Coral, 3 places)
2:50 – 0.5pt e/w –Ten Pounds – 25/1 (already advised)
3:25 – 1pt win – Fifth Column – 9/2 (general)
4:00 – No bet
4:35 – 1pt win – Flora Of Bermuda – 7/1 (Ladbrokes/Coral)
5:10 – 1pt win – Atlantic Sunset - 7/2 (general)
Orion's Belt to win the 1:40pm Newmarket
Ryan Moore can steer this exciting filly to her first success.
